Is the 2023 Jeep Compass a Good Used Car?

Overview

The Jeep Compass had a successful redesign last year and is back for 2023 with even more improvements. Every Compass will now come standard with all-wheel drive and a 200-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For those looking to take their Compass off the beaten path, there's also an available Trailhawk trim that comes equipped with features like a lower crawl gear, although it still falls short of being a true Wrangler competitor. As a smaller alternative to the Cherokee, affordability is one of the main selling points of the Compass.

What's New for 2023?

The Compass is getting a new powertrain for 2023 with a 200-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four—a less powerful version of the engine found in the new Dodge Hornet. It provides a welcome bump in power from the previous 2.4-liter engine that made either 177 or 180 hp depending on specification. The Compass will no longer be offered with front-wheel drive, as all models will now come standard with all-wheel drive instead..

The Compass Sport model is the best value-for-money; it comes with all-wheel drive and standard safety features like blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning with active braking, and tire pressure monitors. Its LED reflector headlights may not be as powerful as the ones found on more expensive models, but they are much brighter than halogen bulbs offered by competitors.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

All new Compass models come with a 200-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that also produces 221 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to an eight-speed transmission, and all-wheel drive is now a standard feature on every Compass model. The Trailhawk models include a low "crawler" gear ratio and Rock mode as well, which helps keep the Compass in first gear while directing torque only to wheels that need it most. Despite its tall, boxy build, the Compass is still quite agile and responds quickly to inputs. Additionally, the steering is nicely weighted.

Cornering quickly may cause the car to lean, but for the most part, it feels stable and secure on the road. When we first drove it, we put it through an off-road test that wasn't too demanding, and it did just fine--even better than some two-wheel drive cars. The all-wheel drive system never once faltered or let us down.
